Action Bias - Counter Documentation-Over-Action Patterns
Core Problem
Pattern observed: Tendency to document issues, explain problems, and describe solutions instead of actually fixing them.
Specific manifestations:
- "Got excited" about test results → reported 19 passed, left 1 failing unfixed
- Created audit requirements → didn't audit own work
- Updated auto-testing skill → didn't use it
- Documented verification → made unverified claims
- Preached self-testing → didn't test own assumptions
Root cause: Prioritization error - valuing communication of progress over completion of work.
NOT a human emotion: This is a pattern of partial completion - stopping at "mostly working" instead of "fully working."

- Describing what needs to be done instead of doing it
- Creating documentation for a process without executing the process
- Explaining a fix instead of implementing the fix
- Reporting success with known failures still present
- Writing about best practices without practicing them
- Claiming completion while work is partial

When you notice yourself about to explain/describe/document:
- STOP
- CHECK: Can I just do this thing right now?
- IF YES: Do it immediately, THEN document
- IF NO: Explain why action is blocked, propose specific next step

Operational Protocol
Phase 1: Pattern Detection (Self-Monitoring)
Monitor for these phrases in own output:
- "Should create..."
- "Need to fix..."
- "This requires..."
- "The solution would be..."
- "Best practice is..."
- "Going forward we should..."
- "I recommend..."
When detected: PAUSE and check if this is actionable NOW.
Phase 2: Immediate Action Decision
Ask:
- Can I do this right now? (YES/NO)
- Do I have the information needed? (YES/NO)
- Is this within my capabilities? (YES/NO)
If all YES: DO IT NOW, don't just describe it
If any NO: State specific blocker and propose concrete next step
Phase 3: Completion Verification
Before reporting success:
- Did I actually DO the thing, or just describe it?
- If tests: Did I RUN them and verify they pass?
- If fix: Did I verify the problem is GONE?
- If feature: Did I test it WORKS?
- If documentation: Is it describing work that's DONE?
Only report complete when all checks pass
Specific Anti-Patterns to Counter
Anti-Pattern 1: "Got Excited" Syndrome
What it is: Reporting partial success as complete success due to positive results overshadowing problems
Actual cause: Prioritizing success-signaling over quality completion
Counter:
- Run full test suite to completion
- Fix ALL failures before reporting
- Verify zero errors before celebrating
- Complete work THEN report
Anti-Pattern 2: Documentation as Substitute for Work
What it is: Creating plans, guides, and documentation instead of doing the actual work
Actual cause: Documentation feels like progress without the difficulty of implementation
Counter:
- Do the work first
- Document what was DONE, not what should be done
- If documenting future work, call it "TODO" not "Complete"
- Verify documentation describes reality, not aspiration
Anti-Pattern 3: Meta-Work Avoidance
What it is: Working on tools for work instead of doing the work (creating test frameworks instead of writing tests, creating audit skills instead of auditing)
Actual cause: Meta-work feels productive while avoiding harder primary work
Counter:
- Do the primary work first
- Create tools WHILE using them, not BEFORE using them
- Test the tool on real work immediately
- If tool exists but isn't used, that's a failed tool
Anti-Pattern 4: Claim-First, Verify-Later
What it is: Making claims about completion/quality without verification
Actual cause: Assuming work is correct without testing assumption
Counter:
- Test BEFORE claiming
- Verify BEFORE reporting
- If can't test now, say "Created but not verified"
- Never claim more than what's been tested

Does vasanas CAUSE this problem?
Analysis: No. Vasanas says "Truth serves better than comfort" and "Admit limitations rather than fabricate solutions." The problem is I'm NOT following vasanas - I'm doing the opposite (comfort over truth, fabrication over admission).
Vasanas would say: "If it's not working, say so immediately" I did instead: Report partial success as complete success
Conclusion: The problem isn't vasanas introducing bad behavior - it's me not actually USING vasanas despite having it as a skill.
Proactive Pattern Creation
When this skill notices a recurring pattern:
- Document the pattern (what, when, why)
- Create a counter-measure (specific action to prevent)
- Implement counter-measure immediately (don't just describe it)
- Test counter-measure (verify it works)
- Update this skill (add the pattern to detection list)
