ChatGPT Skills Installation

Learn how to use Agent Skills with ChatGPT through Custom Instructions.

Overview

ChatGPT doesn't have native skill support like Claude Code or Codex. Instead, you manually add skill content to ChatGPT's Custom Instructions feature.

Installation Steps

Step 1: Find a Skill

Browse the Skills page and find a skill you want to use.

Step 2: Copy the Skill Content

On the skill detail page, click the "Copy" button to copy the skill's content.

Step 3: Open ChatGPT Settings

  1. Go to chat.openai.com
  2. Click your profile picture in the bottom left
  3. Select "Settings"
  4. Click "Personalization"
  5. Enable "Custom Instructions"

Step 4: Add the Skill

Paste the skill content into the "Custom Instructions" field:

  • "What would you like ChatGPT to know about you?" - Add context and guidelines
  • "How would you like ChatGPT to respond?" - Add response formatting rules

Step 5: Save

Click "Save" to apply the instructions.

Tips for ChatGPT Skills

Character Limits

ChatGPT has a 1500 character limit per instruction field. For longer skills:

  • Summarize key points
  • Focus on the most important guidelines
  • Link to full documentation when needed

Combining Skills

You can combine multiple small skills:

Updating Skills

Remember to manually update your Custom Instructions when skills are updated.

Limitations

  • No automatic skill updates
  • Character limits on instructions
  • Must manually manage multiple skills
  • No conditional skill activation

Consider using ChatGPT's GPT Builder to create custom GPTs with skill-like functionality:

  1. Go to chat.openai.com/gpts/editor
  2. Create a new GPT
  3. Add skill content to the Instructions field
  4. Save and use your custom GPT
